Sept. 11th Salon
Aug 29th
Please join in on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 7 p.m., for the seventh iteration of the graciously daring performing arts series, the Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven. The Salon will be held at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, in Manhattan.
These Saturday Sanctuary Salons bring together an exciting range of musicians, dancers, and other performing artists in a convivial, informal setting. Alongside the core, resident company, Mark Lamb Dance, the September Salon will highlight the artistry of the choreographer Brittany Antle, and the far-reaching vocalist and composer Kyoko Kitamura.
Brittany Antle is a mainstay of Mark Lamb Dance. Salon regulars, who already prize her expressive and witty dancing, are in for a revelation, as they discover her unique world of compellingly surprising gestures and theatrical immediacy.
Kyoko Kitamura is a significant voice of “downtown music.” Having performed her “avant cabaret” songs with Mark Lamb Dance at previous Salons, Kyoko will reprise two of those delights, but will also bring forward Go-Zee-Lah, her collaboration with pianist Yayoi Ikawa, bridging Japanese and American cultures within the context of modern jazz.
This Salon will commemorate the unforgettable date, 9/11, with a performance of Go-Zee-Lah’s Peace Requiem (a composition deepened by the American-born Kitamura having reported on the Iraq War for Japanese television). Amid the Salon signature of “structured improvisations,” lovers of Margaret Atwood’s futurist feminist novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, will particularly respond to Ms. Antle’s dance on Atwood themes, entitled “. . . do us part.” This dance features the dynamo Lauren Kime, and will be receiving its overdue New York premiere.
Performances are always interlaced with conversation, wine and food (much of it homemade), as a lovely church just off Times Square transforms itself into the most stimulating of New York nightspots. Be prepared for fun, as a community of artists and arts lovers further creates itself in a beautifully gracious setting.
As one audience member wrote, “Congratulations for the beautiful offering that fully nourished my senses, presented with such love, brilliance, spontaneity, and community warmth.”
Again, Saturday, September 11, at 7 p.m., at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, for Mark Lamb Dance company members Korhan Basaran, Megan Ward, and Sarah Pope, along with Brittany Antle and company, movement artist Deborah Gladstein, Kyoko Kitamura, Yayoi Ikawa and Go-Zee-Lah. Expect an expansively entertaining and experimentally elegant evening. Come to nibble and quaff, greet and meet, and join in the joy of memorable monthly Saturdays saturated in the ethos of artistic discovery and the pleasures of audaciously assured performance.
Upcoming Salon August 14th
Jul 23rd
Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven
Please join in on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 7 p.m., for the latest installment of the graciously daring performing arts series, the Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven, to be held at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, in Manhattan.
The August Salon, entitled “Moving Memoirs,” will be an evening of impromptu music and dance structured by Sarah Pope, a mainstay of the Mark Lamb Dance company. Sarah is a seasoned improviser interested in the investigation of personal experience and history – the things we remember and keep with us from childhood into old age, about ourselves, our family members and our relationships – and how the universal can be discovered in the specific.
The Salon will feature many S7 “regulars,” including jazz artist Kendra Shank, and movement artist Deborah Gladstein, along with Mark Lamb and his company including Brittany Antle, Korhan Basaran, and Megan Ward. New to the series is violinist and vocalist Helen Yee, who will collaborate with Mark Lamb on his latest rendition of his work exploring family history through gastronomy, “Into the Fire.” Pianist Vladimir Katz will be accompanied by Mark Lamb dancers, each performing their own solo “Moving Memoirs.” Longtime Mark Lamb Dance collaborator, singer/songwriter Jodie Manross, joins the S7 series for the first time, sharing her songs, many of them heart-rending reminiscences of family, friends, and Southern life.
Song and dance will be interlaced with cheerful chatter, topped off by homemade food (including family recipes passed down through generations – some of which will be danced to and about!) and wine, as a beautiful little church just off Times Square transforms itself into the most stimulating of New York nightspots. Several previous Salons have ended with spontaneous jamming, audience members jumping up to dance with the featured artists. A community is developing here, one of joyful engagement. This August, audience members will be invited to share pieces of their own histories, bringing further diversity to the evening.
As one audience member wrote, following a previous Salon, “Everything about this unique performance whetted my entertainment appetite for more from these stunning performers. Add to this the ambience of the candlelit church, the tables laden with food and drink and the warm interaction of the performers with the audience and the result yields an unforgettable evening of enjoyment.”
Again, Saturday, August 14, at 7 p.m., at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street. $20 suggested donation for admission at the door; reservations recommended in advance via s7reservations@gmail.com. Expect an expansively entertaining and experimentally elegant evening. Come to nibble and quaff, greet and meet, and join in the joy of another splendiferously satisfying Saturday, surrounded in the sizzle of artistic discovery and the pleasures of audaciously assured performance.

JUNE 12TH SALON
May 26th
Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven
Featuring Terre, Suzzy, and David Roche along with Gary Dial and movement artist Deborah Gladstein.
Please join in on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 7 p.m., for the fourth installment of the graciously daring performing arts series, the Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven, to be held at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, in Manhattan.
The June Salon will feature the vocalist and guitarist Terre Roche, she of the beloved group, The Roches, leading a “Roche Family Spectacular,” including her sister, Suzzy Roche, and her brother, David, alongside the genre-bending dance and theater group, Mark Lamb Dance. Is it too early, after only four months, for the Sanctuary Salon Series to return to its roots? The first Salon presented Terre Roche, and it was an incredible success. Not only did Terre sing and play magnificent folk and blues guitar, but she invented amazingly shapely songs on the spot, accompanied Mark Lamb in his forays into dance-storytelling, while also jamming with the noted jazz pianist, Garry Dial.
Expect much more of the same on June 12, and then some. See why the motto for these Salons has become: Expect the Unexpected! See for yourself why unsolicited encomiums are pouring in, letting us know how these Salons represent “a great opportunity to see some of NYC’s finest artists give birth to new ideas in a relaxing space.”
Performances will be interlaced with convivial conversation, food (much of it homemade) and wine, as a lovely little church just off Times Square transforms itself into the most stimulating of New York nightspots. Expect the highest artistry and the most daring improvisations, from vocalists and dancers alike. Be prepared for the distinct possibility that singers will end up dancing, and dancers vocalizing – it’s happened here before! Be prepared for fun, as a community of artists and arts lovers further creates itself in a beautifully gracious setting.
As one audience member wrote, after the first Salon featuring Terre Roche: “Congratulations for the beautiful offering that fully nourished my senses, presented with such love, brilliance, spontaneity, and community warmth. Thank you for an exceptional artistic and social home run.”
Again, Saturday, June 12, at 7 p.m., at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, for Terre Roche, with Suzzy and David Roche, Mark Lamb Dance, and other guest performers. Expect an expansively entertaining and experimentally elegant evening. Come to nibble and quaff, greet and meet, and join in the joy of memorable monthly Saturdays saturated in the ethos of artistic discovery and the pleasures of audaciously assured performance.

bending dance and theater troupe, Mark Lamb Dance. All four vocalists will build
upon significant international careers by sharing their latest work and their most
adventurous flights of experimentation.
Fay Victor is a jazz vocalist, a composer and lyricist, a deconstructor and reconstructor of classic blues,
spirituals and poetry, and a noted vocal instructor. Kyoko Kitamura is a leading light of “downtown vocals,”
a composer and pianist, whose music encompasses all categories. Terre Roche is a mainstay of the
beloved family group, The Roches, and an accomplished guitarist and on-the-spot creator of songs, as
everybody who attended the first Second Saturday Salon happily learned. The jazz great Kendra Shank
can do anything, which she proved at the last Sanctuary Salon. Mark Lamb, curator of these Salons, is a
dancer, choreographer, and raconteur, often all at the same time.
Performances will be interlaced with convivial conversation, food (much of it homemade) and wine, as a
lovely little church just off Times Square transforms itself into the most stimulating of New York nightspots.
Expect the highest artistry and the most daring improvisations, from dancers and vocalists alike. Be
prepared for the distinct likelihood that singers will end up dancing, and vice versa, before the evening
is out. Be prepared for fun, and for joining in as a community of artists and arts lovers creates itself in a
beautifully gracious setting.
To quote from an unsolicited letter from an audience member: “The recent performance I attended of
the Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at Seven offered a cornucopia of delights in musical and
improvisational dance to dazzle the senses. Add to this the ambiance of the candlelit church, the tables
laden with food and drink and the warm interaction of the performers with the audience and the result
yields an unforgettable evening of enjoyment.”
So be there at 7 p.m. on the eighth of May, when four great vocalists join forces with one amazing dance
company, for three sets of music, dance and pure joy at the third ever Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon
Series at Seven. Come to nibble and quaff, greet and meet, and share in the adventures of artistic discovery
and the pleasures of audaciously assured performance.
Mark Lamb Dance presents Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon Series at 7 pm at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th street (between 9th and 10th Aves) $20 suggested donation for beverage, lite hors d’oeuvres, and salon performances included. Sat. April 10, 7-10pm
Mar 24th
New York, NY – Saturday, April 10, 2010 marks the second event ever of a
graciously daring performing arts series, the Second Saturday Sanctuary Salon
Series at Seven. The Salon will be held at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th
Street, in Manhattan.
Following up on a rapturously received first evening, the Salon Series will
offer disarmingly original performances, crossing over many genres of artistic
expression, presented in a setting both beautiful and informal. These Salons will
regularly showcase great artists, some famous, some little known but worthy,
sharing their newest work and most adventurous flights of experimentation.
These performances will be interlaced with convivial conversation, food (much of it homemade) and
wine, as a magnificent little church just off Times Square transforms itself into the most stimulating of
New York nightspots.
The April 10 Salon will bring together the vocalists Kendra Shank and Kyoko Kitamura with the genre-
bending dance and theater troupe, Mark Lamb Dance. Mark Lamb, the choreographer, dancer,
storyteller and performance artist, curates the Salon Series. His company, which seamlessly mixes
choreography and improvisation, modern dance and conversation, has collaborated with Kendra and
Kyoko before, but fans of the various artists are advised to expect the unexpected.
Kendra Shank is at the forefront of contemporary jazz singers, but for this Salon, she will leave her
band at home, and bring her guitar virtuosity, her digital sound-processing electronics, and maybe
her dancing shoes, to accompany her pellucid vocals. This will be Kendra’s third program with Mark
Lamb Dance, and their partnership, much of it spur-of-the-moment, has by now reached the level of
spirited, loving telepathy. Her longtime improvising accomplice, Kyoko Kitamura (to be featured at the
May Salon), will sit in, with both Kendra and the company.
Please anticipate vocals to stretch over a world of artistic genres, and dancers whose artistry runs way
beyond mere dancing. Don’t be surprised by conversation set to lyrical movement. Revel in Metro
Church’s glorious acoustics, and see why The New York Times described one previous Mark Lamb
Dance show at the church as “an expression of communal joy.”
Expect expansively entertaining and experimentally elegant evenings every month. See a church
sanctuary become a Salon. Come to nibble and quaff, greet and meet, and join in the joy of memorable
monthly Saturdays saturated in the ethos of artistic discovery and the pleasures of audaciously assured
performance.

Upcoming Performance Jan. 30
Jan 21st
A Remarkable Lollipop (for adult consumption only)
SATURDAY JANUARY 30TH
Brecht Forum http://brechtforum.org/
451 West Street (that’s the West Side Highway) between Bank & Bethune Streets
DOUBLE BILL: Kyoko Kitamura/Mark Lamb’s “A Remarkable Lollipop” + Fay Victor’s “The ExPosed Blues duo meets Tomas Ulrich”
$10 suggested donation for the whole evening
Please join us at the Brecht Forum, on Saturday, January 30, at 9 p.m., when the improvising vocalist/pianist/composer Kyoko Kitamura will join the improvising dancer/choreographer/monologist Mark Lamb for a program of music, movement and modulated madness. Kyoko and Mark will be sharing the evening with The Exposed Blues Duo. Fay Victor on voice and Anders Nilsson on guitar. Tomas Ulrich plays cello. A MEAN Cello. Here they explore dark, sinewy textures of the blues, shouts, wails, free improv and many strings vibrating all at the same time.
This will be the fourth project in a year bringing two multiply creative artists together (Mark and Kyoko), but the first time for Kyoko and Mark working simply by themselves. The evening will cover much artistic ground, some compositions, some space for open on-the-spot discovery. After a year of collaborating together, Mark and Kyoko are still learning from each other, bringing the shapeliness of movement into music, while continuing to add musical sensitivity to theatrical dance. Thus continues an ongoing process, the ever-developing layering of information as two searching artists build upon the wisdom of a variety of magnificent disciplines. Please expect “cutting edge” theatrical work, which honors down-home roots with both sincerity and wit.
Upcoming Workshops!
Jan 12th
Starting Jan. 20 I will be teaching a series of workshops on the Mark Lamb method of improvisational dance and text.
Classes will be held at 6:30 pm at the Metro Baptist Church, 410 W. 40th Street (between 9th and 10th)
